Chenrezi—Approaching the Essence through Appearance
October 8 (pm) – October 11 (pm)
The practice of Chenrezi—the bodhisattva of compassion—is probably the most widely practiced meditation of the vajrayana tradition. When Kalu Rinpoche founded dharma centers across the world in the 1970s and 80s, this was the practice he first instituted. Among all tantric practices, there are none so accessible yet so profound.
Chenrezi is a creation stage practice through which one replaces our habitual identification with ordinary body, speech, and mind with familiarization with the awakened body, speech, and mind of Chenrezi. But Chenrezi should not be understood to be some being or entity separate from us. Chenrezi is the union of wisdom and compassion. The nature of our mind is the union of wisdom and compassion. Through working with the appearances of the relative body, speech, and mind of this Chenrezi, we approach the ultimate essence of our minds.
This retreat will be an intensive introduction to this practice. Beginners will learn all they need to know to begin practicing on their own. Those already familiar with the practice will probably learn some new tools to integrate in their practice and find ample practice time to deepen their experience.
The retreat will be conducted over Zoom. No prior experience is necessary, and no empowerment is required. The text for the practice will be displayed on the screen. Optional readings prior to or during the retreat include “Chenrezig, Lord of Love” by Bokar Rinpoche; “Chenrezi, The Practice of Compassion” by Ringu Tulku Rinpoche; and “Continuous Rain to Benefit Beings” by Khakyab Dorje, the 15th Gyalwang Karmapa. (Bokar Rinpoche’s book and the 15th Karmapa’s books are available at KCC. Please contact Linda at lgrove@kcc.org to access). These both explain the practice from the beginning. A book for those who wish to broaden their reading on the practice is “Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones: by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.
No printouts will be distributed before this retreat.
