In Vajrayana Buddhism, in addition to taking refuge in the Three Jewels of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, we go for refuge in the Three Roots of the gurus, yidams, and dharma protectors. Mahakala Chakdrukpa, the Six-Armed Wisdom Protector, is the principal dharma protector of the Shangpa Kagyu tradition and is also practiced in the Kama Kagyu and many other lineages of Tibetan Buddhism.

Mahakala Chakdrukpa is an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, arising in a wrathful form. Kyungpo Naljor, the founder of the Shangpa Kagyu lineage, received the practice from the great siddha Maitripa and took it back to Tibet where it spread far and wide. The previous Kalu Rinpoche had the practice done at most of the dharma centers he founded across the world.

This practice was done at KCC in years past but has been on pause for some time. This summer, Lama Eric will provide instructions, and we will begin to engage in the practice more regularly. You will need to have received the empowerment to participate, and this is a wonderful opportunity as Khenchen Rinpoche has such a close connection to this lineage.

From a biography of a Shangpa Master: “In general, because Six-Armed Mahakala is the wish-fulfilling gem, he leads to the attainment of all realizations and fulfills all wishes. More specifically, because he is the blessings protector, his blessings are swift and his powers great. Since he holds beings dearly, he appears to anyone who prays to him with sincere faith and devotion. He will protect one from all obstacles.”

This event is in person only.
